I had to fix these a bit. For those that dont do 3D stuff, this is what the model looks like without any texture on it. The nice shadow gradient effect you see here is a special render pass called "ambient occlusion." Texturing is my favorite thing to do. I designed and modeled these but I'm really not a great modeler... or designer, I guess :) "Butchered Meats" is going to be a great film and I feel lucky to work on it.

When these are done they are going to have a nice old leathery look to them.

This isnt that interesting of a post. But just wanted to let family and friends know what I was working on. This is a prop (actually, only part of the geometry is showing, cause I am not sure how propietary this is :) ) for one of our films. It is a popcorn machine and what you see is the body of it. Here are two renders I did. Which one do you like better? Im liking the white stripes more. And to Megan B- the dreamworks guy came and visited our school. He didnt offer me a job or anything, although later we'll see!

I bet you are all sick of this, but I have received a few requests. The hair is not reacting to the the light, but the surface is done. Ill need to fix that. This has been done for quite awhile, I just never posted. The texture Lead at Dreamworks said he loved it. I guess that means something.

Its a shame how much the munchkins ruin this picture. I wish I could go back in time and re draw it, but I don't have the money to buy a DeLorean. The idea of the munchkins is not bad, but I didn't take any time to design them.

My take on wizard of Oz. I am glad I have three years left at BYU, so I can get better. I am new at this painting (and relatively new to sketching. I never took art seriously until 6 months ago) thing. I love it though.

I work at Nuskin talking to Korean speakers and English speakers alike. However, in neither language can I say my name correctly. I do my phone greeting and the other party says "oh, hello Phil," or, "Hi Bill, heres what I want to do..."

The Koreans say "No-el" or "joe-eri."

It honestly happens 90% of the time so I just stopped caring. At least when something bad happens now they will say "I think I talked to Phil" and then my managers will go off after the unsuspecting Phil or Bill. Thats a plus.

It remains to be said whether I just suck at enunciating or if people on the phone just dont care to listen.

I really did not think of Peter Pan when I made this.

Here's my stylized painting of some environment. There's no story behind it, just something I happened to make. This turned out cool I guess, but not at all what I originally envisioned. It kinda looks like a bedtime story illustration. The assignment was to paint in atmospheric effects but with the way I did the composition, it didn't allow for too much of that. Oh well, it was a fun painting anyway. I think compositionally this painting is weak but I really like the style and the overall mood it gives.

Captain Inferno

I haven't been able to do the LOST caricatures lately because I've been working on this. It was a character design assignment for my painting class. I spent so much time on it and I think it's a big improvement from my last images, but I've learned a lot and am excited to apply everything to my next painting. I could re do a thousand things on this image, but ya gotta move forward.

Anyway, the story behind this picture: We had to come up with a character and apply it to a medium (i.e. comic book, 3d animation etc) and think of a background history to him/her. My characters name is Captain Inferno, and due to his inability to control his fire, he was given one last chance to prove himself to the family of superheroes by being put in charge of baby Norman. So the whole film would be the antics of the baby getting in trouble while Captain Inferno balances fighting crime and babysitting. Taking a class in college like this is really a contrast to the science classes I had before, and I am really enjoying being creative again.

Here are two other line arts for characters from LOST. My trial version of Painter X ran out. I ordered it, but it won't be here until Wednesday. I have other homework needing to get done, so I probably won't get started on it till then. Please tell me what can be done better on these characters! One of my good friends asked me to put them all in a collage when the characters are done. He says he wants to put them in his house. I laughed but I guess it is a compliment... I think Ben Linus's eyes are too big. Caricatures are hard because, you have to emphasize certain parts but not overdo it. I think I overdid it in this case.

Here is my first LOST caricature. I was inspired to do this because its the only TV show I ever watch, and my mom loves it as well. Coming up are Ben Linus and John Locke. I already have the line art for them, I just need to paint em! I use Corel Painter X. It is actually my first caricature ever, so I realize the likeness isn't that accurate. Come to think of it, the painting isnt THAT great either, but I am just learning how to paint. Its fun.

Blogging is like reality TV for those who prefer reading. My sisters are blog people, and every week or so i get an email inviting me to read their blog. It says "you have been invited to read so-and-so's blog." And then you feel guilty if you dont, because its like saying MAYBE you don't care about that person. Like getting a wedding invitation that says "you are cordially invited to attend Beth and Steve's wedding, but you dont HAVE to...I guess."
I'm terrible at writing in my journal, so maybe a blog will get me started in that direction. I enjoy writing, but I dont feel like enough great things happen to me to write about. Then again, it seems most of the blogging community writes about how awesome their new dishwasher is and other related subjects, so i could have a chance right? I havent gotten a new dishwasher, but I do work at Nuskin....
Nuskin. Ever heard of it? Its like Amway, but mormon-style. Or at least run by Mormons. Utah has a ton of multi level marketing companies. I think it is spurred by the utah mindset of "let's see who can get in to debt the fastest straight out of college." NuSkin, while falling into the arena of MLM, is actually a good company to work for. For a part time job for a college student, they pay better than anybody around. plus, i can pick up as many hours as I need. Right now while preparing for school, Im working around 55 hours a week.

What is it with Idaho Falls?

I would like to explain my roadtripping experiences with Idaho Falls for a brief moment. As those of you with cars most likely well know, there are few equivalents to making you feel as helpless and unlucky as breaking down on a road trip. Even if you know a few things about cars, the fact that you are pressed for time and didnt happen to bring your tools with you adds to the suspense. Idaho Falls is a magnet for such situations. The citizens of Idaho Falls, millions of years ago, displeased the car gods and thus a curse was placed upon them. This curse extends to innocent travelers, like you and I. We cannot escape it. My story is as follows.
My car's favorite thing to do is leak large amounts of fluid at any given time. There have been three memorable instances of this happening. Now, if anyone looking to buy my jeep is reading this, please hear me out. The excess dumping of fluid had everything to do with extremely minor issues not directly related to the actual jeep itself.
Before I started my trip to school, I went to pick up a girl who would be travelling with me. I parked in their driveway and went inside. When we returned to the car to load it, the girl's father noticed my rig had spilled its antifreeze guts all over their beautiful driveway. This was not a small leak. This was a full-on purging of the radiator, as if my car had been eating korean food for 2 years. Quickly the Dad covered it up with newspaper so their dog would not lick it up and die. Imagine if I had killed the dog. So here the proud parents are seeing their precious daughter off to college and the vehicle she will be riding in is leaking fluid all over the driveway. If that doesnt instill confidence I dont know what does.
I assured the girl that the car will be fine for the trip. Turns out the problem was a bent radiator cap, which took my dad and I all night and a half tank of gas to figure out. I had given up and went to bed but my dad stayed up all night and fixed it. We were ready to go the next day.
The road trip was uneventful and went without a hitch. That is, until we entered the land of the curse AKA Idaho Falls AKA more mormons per capita than Provo, Utah. (which I reckon is actually like 50% hispanic) We pulled off the freeway to get gas as is the tradition. I noticed smoke eminating from under the car. i quickly drove to a service station to notice not only a waterfall of oil spilling out, but radiator fluid again as well. (Although I came to understand the reason for the oil, the radiator fluid expellation to this day remains a mystery known only to the car demons that plague Idaho Falls. It never happened again) The great thing about all this is the citizen response to these situations. These people are so accustomed to seeing broken down cars (an effect of living under the curse) it does not phase them. As an unnatural amount of oil desecrated the ground under my car, one of these Idahoans walks by and says "ohhh that sucks." And walks off tending to his sibling-marrying and potato growing. (Just joking, i really like idaho people, just not that guy.) I walk into the gas station and ask the attendants where a mechanic shop would be. As luck would have it, it was about 4 o clock on a friday. Places close in one hour. The attendants told me to go to walmart. Walmart does like tires and oil. I think this was a little out of their scope of service. But the funny thing is, had they not directed me to walmart, i wouldnt have met Ken the mechanic who would end up helping me with me dillemna. Idaho Falls is a black hole for breakdowns, but yet it blesses you. There is truly opposition in all things.
The next adventure occured travelling alone. I enjoy travelling alone. You feel like a renegade. Is that just me? I was again, passing through on my way to Montana. I had stopped at a friends house at night and left the next morning, pulling up to a gas station to fill up. The kind IF people informed me that transmission fluid was expelling its red entrails. My car was bleeding like an action hero. I proceeded to assess the situation. I could tell the leak wasnt coming directly from the transmission, rather the hose that led to the radiator. Another random mechanic helped me deduce this. You will find random mechanics are prevalent in Idaho Falls. They are planted there to battle the curse, wielding their tools of justice. This mechanic didnt have time to help me. That was alright, I knew how to work on cars a little bit. I then assumed the role of running around town looking for parts in a borrowed car. No one had the parts I needed, so I attempted to fix the hose itself. I took a few components off the engine and made my way for the buried line. I met a friend, Steve, who let me borrow his tools. Steve worked at taco bell. Apparently Steve has some problem with authority. He quit because they told him "to do stuff." Imagine that, working at a place where they tell you to do things!
I got to the hose and was trying to shove it back into place when I got a phone call. I turned around to answer it and while I was talking, steve had clipped the two ends back together. Right on, Steve.
I was out of there after about 6 hours. Who knew it would take so long to fix a line.
Idaho falls continues to vex the innocent. However, ironically, it always provides a way out at the end. As the old poet said, "it is better for one to break down in Idaho Falls than on the freeway where a large truck could possibly run into you." Wait, that was me.
